Does this sound like you?

“I eat my food really fast. That’s just how I do it.”

Not chewing your food eventually causes gut problems

Well… eating on the run like that that causes problems.  It starts the whole business of efficiently digesting our food off wrong.  The real kicker is that we aren’t even aware that we’re doing this to ourselves.  We don’t know that our eating habits are causing health issues.  We think it is normal to not chew our food. We’re unaware of the health problems that are coming down the pipeline at some point.

When I was growing up nobody actually taught me why chewing my food is important.  What happened is that over time I never really chewed my food more than two or three before I swallowed it.  I ate really fast because I I didn’t know better.  When I ate fast it meant that I could eat more.  The way I ate was borderline gluttony.  I ate quickly so I could shove more food down my throat.  I really didn’t know any better.  Many people don’t know any better either.  That’s why I am writing this blog.  If you want to heal your gut you might want to apply this information.

glut·ton·y   –  “to gulp down or swallow”   means over-indulgence and over-consumption of food or drink

I don’t want anyone to get my food!

Boom!  Who is the winner?  I win – I ate my food the fastest!

This is the way many people eat.  They’re in such a rush to get onto the next thing in life.

The following information is detailed information on how digestion actually works.  It’s simple information but it’s technical at the same time.   It is about how your body uses its food and why it is absolutely necessary to chew your food if you have digestive issues.  If your belly gets the bubbles then read on. This topic is a novel concept.  The material is nothing new.

You have to first make a decision to change

Spoiler alert – I am going to want you to change your habits.   I’m going to give you some information and you’re either going to use it or not. It’s going to help you heal your digestion if you do.  This is going to help your body heal itself.   It will require you to change the way you do things.  If nothing changes then nothing changes.  Sometimes healing takes a lifestyle change.

If you have gut problems then the healing starts here.

Next you have to make the change on a daily basis

Humans are supposed to chew their food. We have these rows of teeth and I want you to use them more. I want you to chew your food more. Chew it until it is liquid mush. I want you to mix your food with as much saliva as possible. That saliva has a purpose. Chew, chew, and keep chewing. Imagine a cow chewing something and imitate that.

Did grandma ever say to chew your food 40 times?  Here’s why…

Seriously this is Advanced Program stuff here.  I hope you are ready.  We are going to discuss what PREDIGESTION means.

You are not predigesting your food

PREDIGESTION

Before our stomach starts digesting our food the process called PREDIGESTION has already started.  This is how it works.  We are supposed to mix as much saliva as possible with our food before we swallow it.  This means chewing it up into as small pieces as possible.  We want to break all the food small  and have it mix up.

Yes, chewing more helps you to taste the food longer too!

There are things called enzymes in the saliva that starts the process of predigesting our food. The enzymes in our saliva begin to immediately digest starchy foods, carbohydrates, and sugars. That way, when the food gets to our stomach, part of it has already began being digested. You have to chew your food for awhile to allow the predigestion process to have time to happen.

After predigestion the food is going to sit in our stomach for about the next few hours to continue the digestion process. During this time the carbohydrates are getting digested and the stomach is getting more acidic so that it can start the process of digesting protein. If people don’t chew their food up then it just sits down there in the stomach as a big lump of food.

Properly digesting protein is actually a complicated process

When food is not chewed thoroughly and mixed with saliva  it makes it harder on the body to digest the food. It may sit in the stomach for 3-4 hours undigested. Sometimes the proteins never get broken down at all. Our stomach just has to pass it along without breaking it down. These undigested proteins actually become a burden on the body. Sometimes our body even attacks the undigested protein. This is the basis of leaky gut syndrome. This can (and will) causes symptoms of fibromyalgia and food allergies.  Plus, it causes all kinds of other digestive problems.

So you’re telling me your belly hurts?

         Please don’t eat like this!

Properly chewing your vegetables does another important thing.  There is a shiny layer on many veggies that humans cannot digest.  I bet you didn’t know that did you?  That’s just the way we are made.  Humans cannot digest this thin layer.  It is called cellulose.  Think of a shiny pepper. That shiny layer is the cellulose. In order to properly digest these vegetables we have to chew them all the way up to completely grind this cellulose to bits.

If we eat vegetables and get gas it is because we didn’t chew them up well.  To digest that layer requires a digestive enzyme called cellulase and humans don’t make it.  We can take digestive enzyme supplements with our meals and not have this problem.

This begins the process called pre-digestion.  I highly recommend you chew your food up.  Keep this up every time you eat and make it a lifelong change.   This is only the beginning of the digestive process.  This is only the beginning of healing the gut.  I highly recommend supplementing with plant based digestive enzymes any time you eat.

Our bodies need as much help as they can get.  Chewing your food is the beginning.

Start today.  Your body will thank you.
